Virgin Atlantic A330 Upper Class Atlanta Manchester Review

Upper Class fly check-in

Upper Class wing entrance

On all my previous Virgin Upper Form flights I had connected through Heathrow on ex Dublin tickets so I had never actually used the Upper Class Fly. On this ane I had used miles to upgrade a premium economic system ticket and so I was adamant to give it a try. The Upper Class wing is quite different to BA'southward Offset Wing and both have their own advantages. Virgin's has an entirely separate entrance to the main concluding where yous can be dropped off by one of their chauffeurs or by your own transport.

Equally I was on miles, I had got a taxi to the airport from a nearby hotel and we soon saw the entrance to the offset fly on the left through an automatic barrier every bit you approach the terminal. Up until the security, I found the whole feel very impressive. There is a luxurious entrance to the wing like that of a five star hotel where yous are met at the car and your luggage taken.

I had checked in online every bit advised for the Wing and was shortly taken to a check desk-bound and given my boarding pass. The expanse within also has the feel of a private jet or First class last with a seating surface area and being relatively tranquillity. Y'all used to have to prebook if yous were using your own transport but that is not necessary at present.

Yous and then walk to the private security aqueduct which is where my enjoyment stopped. This is definitely the longest I take always waited in whatsoever premium security queue which was around 15-twenty minutes. It wasn't helped past the fact that apparently no ane in front of me had ever been on a plane earlier and seemed confused by the security staff constantly shouting "take your liquids out of your numberless". So each person would become to the front and be found to have liquids in the scanner or first pulling out private items asking if they were OK (No, its all the same over 100ml and a liquid – how hard is it?)

BA definitely wins in terms of security as I have never had to look more than 5 minutes in the First Wing and for the fact that information technology takes you directly into the lounge. The Virgin i only brings yous out past the normal security exit.

Bar expanse

I have reviewed the Virgin Clubhouse many times (read the reviews here) so I won't go into as well many specifics except my experience this time. It was mid-forenoon when I arrived and I was greeted warmly at the desk and asked if I had been earlier which I had. They offered to store my pocketbook which I declined and and then, as usual, my first motion was to head to the salon to book some appointments.

The spa and salon

Virgin Clubhouse heathrow review

Hair salon

This deserves a bit more than of a write up equally they recently changed the treatment menus as well equally allowing you to pay with miles. The free treatments take changed and the options for a free fifteen minute treatment are at present:

  • Dry accident out
  • Fringe trim
  • Gents cervix tidy haircut
  • Beard trim
  • Nails file and vitrify
  • Limited Radiant Y'all facial
  • Head massage
  • Unwind – scalp and feet pressure points

I have had the Unwind before which was OK but I thought this fourth dimension I would have the blowout and pay for a longer Thai Pes massage at £35 for 30 minutes. I could have paid 7000 miles instead if I wanted but I did get a x% discount on the treatment for being Virgin Golden. I personally think the prices are quite reasonable compared to what you pay in a salon.

The foot massage was skillful and the spa was a bit quieter than last time which helped equally the treatment rooms are open at the top so it can be a chip noisy. Both the therapist and the hairdresser were lovely and I was pleased with the results of my accident dry. It fifty-fifty lasted well into the evening when I was fortunate to meet upwardly with Patrick in New York who is well known on my British Airways Gold Facebook group and is as well a reader of this blog.

If you want to see the full card of treatments and prices including miles, yous tin find it here.

Food and drink

Seeing information technology was mid-morn, they were serving breakfast. I had purposely not had breakfast and then headed for the restaurant once my treatments were booked. You tin can either lodge from the menu or visit the deli area and choose from a selection. Here is the breakfast carte:

Clubhouse breakfast menu

I went for the Egg Royale, one of my favourite breakfast dishes. Similar many lounges, the portion was a bit measly with just ane egg just it was tasty with plenty of sauce. Naturally, I had a Bucks fizz with it also every bit a good cappuccino. The service was good initially but they weren't quite and then good at offer top-ups of drinks. However, it didn't take long to grab someone to order another drink.

I then headed over to the bar area to endeavor ane of the Dandelyon bar (from the Mondrian in London) conceived cocktails earlier I headed off to board. I had a Elevation Signal Fizz which was not made with champagne but tequila, sour pineapple and soda. Information technology was a lovely refreshing drink with a affect of ginger.  Everything is tabular array service in the Virgin lounge merely I will often head to the bar to order for the sake of speed as I did this fourth dimension.

Boarding

Living wall in the boarding area at Terminal 3

I had asked to be included in pre-boarding so I could get some photos of the motel whilst it was empty. In the lounge, they make two calls then unless you are in a bustle you don't need to head off until the second one. Pre-boarding was announced and I made my way on board. The coiffure were very helpful as I was taking photos, trying to stay out of my way.

Amenities at seat on boarding

At the seat were a wash pocketbook, a canteen of water and the card. The amenity kit contained: Rituals lip blam, body moisturiser and center cream in a pouch, pen, socks, toothpaste, toothbrush, eyemask and ear plugs. I liked the kit overall as information technology had pretty much all the essentials and the large toothpaste is the perfect size for a few nighttime's travelling.

Unfortunately, I had been ousted from my seat at some point from making the initial reservation as the shipping type had changed from a B787 to an A330-300. My overnice window seat had changed to a middle row seat with the only saving grace being it was in the heart of the cabin rather than by the bar or the galley. I was pretty annoyed since this happened both ways and by the time I realised there were no other seats available. I should have used Expert Flyer to set up an warning.

I was offered Champagne or a soft drink. No need to state what I had! Virgin serve the Canard Duchene Champagne which BA are also now featuring. Information technology is no Krug but I actually quite like it.

Pre difference champagne

It was interesting that again I did not receive whatever sort of acknowledgement of my Virgin Aureate status on either flight which so far is four/four where in that location has been no mention of it. I am not in the slightest fleck bothered, but I do find it a bit odd if the coiffure are meant to do information technology.

The cabin coiffure member looking after me came to introduce themselves and check I was familiar with the seat every bit well as taking my pre-tiffin drink guild and what I wanted to eat.

The seat and motel

Upper grade motel rows K and K

The A330-300 used to be the to the lowest degree liked aircraft in the armada on Virgin due to the seats which were much shorter than the B787 ones and had fiddling storage space. Virgin, fortunately, decided to refurbish them all fairly recently with the terminal ones going into service earlier this year. The layout is very similar to the B787 apart from the bar area which is at the dorsum of the motel perpendicular to the fuselage. I rather similar the bar sitting at the finish of the cabin rather than the B787 which is in the center of the plane. The bar is staffed for part of the flying but there are also help yourself drinks and snacks there during the flying.

Upper Class bar

In that location are iii rows of seats with the all-time seats being the A side. As well every bit existence a window seat they are more individual as they face the back of a row of seats rather than the middle K and window K row where you face…. a row of feet!

I was in 6G which was all that was left except the final couple of rows of K.

As part of the refurbishment, Virgin put in overhead storage lockers for the heart seats equally in that location were previously none. These were withal pretty pocket-sized though and I only just got my suitcase in.

Overhead locker

The seats were the standard Virgin ones which have a limited recline and have to be flipped over into a bed. The storage space is a little express for take off and landing. In that location is a pop up compartment which is big enough to take small items similar glasses or a charger and that is near it. Afterward take off at that place is the flip down drinks tray and besides room under the ottoman. You lot tin can also shop stuff to the side and back of the seat quite easily.

I discover the seats reasonably comfortable for working and sleeping although I do prefer to have a seat with a big recline. I could reach the foot stool hands even when upright but I would accept liked to have a leg rest when relaxing.

The crew equally usual were very proactive at offering to make upwardly your bed which is a dainty touch although I ordinarily merely do it myself. The bedding consists of a big pillow with a crisp white cotton wool pillowcase, duvet and a mattress topper. Although the bed side is a little hard I exercise detect the Virgin mattress topper one of the best out in that location as it is very well padded. I detect the bed pretty comfy for sleeping and there is enough room for me to sleep on my side.

Nutrient and potable

I like that Virgin ever have a few cocktails available on the menu that modify regularly, although do find a few of them a fiddling on the sweet side. This time I tried the Le Latin Fizz which I enjoyed but would accept preferred served in a flute without the ice every bit you lose the fizz. Information technology was champagne with citrus juices and non as well sweet. As usual, it was served with crisps. (On the way back I did sample the new Aviation Gin seeing that it was Ryan Reynolds' brand and I liked it merely didn't love it.)

Cocktail and crisps

Here is the drinks list:

Unlike BA there is no pre-social club selection for Virgin except for special meals only I accept never not got my showtime selection, although I have heard a few people get told that theirs wasn't available. The menu had some good sounding options:

The chief repast is served straight after take off but you can guild from the actress bites section at any time. The tabular array was laid upward with the usual tablecloth and cutlery plus the cute common salt and pepper shakers that they encourage yous to take (brand sure yous get them to empty them out though or your manus luggage will end up total of salt!)

I was slightly torn by the starter as the mushrooms sounded good merely I am not keen on tarragon and so I went for the prawns instead, large mistake! Whilst the prawns themselves were fine the samphire was one of the worst things I accept eaten on a aeroplane. I am guessing it may have been raw or at to the lowest degree it tasted like it. I generally similar samphire in a dish as long equally it is balanced with less salty ingredients. This was very salty and very, very chewy so I left it all and only ate the prawns.

Prawn and samphire starter

To drink I had the Bourgogne Chardonnay which was pretty average just drinkable. Next, I had the charred cod which had a overnice spicy boot to it and wasn't at all overcooked being nevertheless quite moist in the marinade. One of the things I like nigh Virgin food is they often take a tasty Asian lighter dish on the menu which is perfect for me.

Charred cod

I am non normally much of a dessert person just I always cease up indulging on Virgin as their warm puddings with a splash of cream are ever amazing. This one was no exception despite a slightly misleading description.

Apple Tarte Tatin

Information technology was chosen a tarte tatin simply was more like a sponge with an apple tarte tatin topping but information technology tasted pretty expert then I was happy. Sadly I didn't have room for cheese fifty-fifty though the trolley looked very tempting. I liked the fact they had onion marmalade to serve with the cheese. I always think there is something nicer almost serving it from a platter on a trolley than just getting a plate of information technology at your seat. Instead, I finished with a drinking glass of red wine, a Crozes Hermitage, which I enjoyed.

Cheese trolley

I had been hoping to try the afternoon tea Virgin had recently designed but I really couldn't manage annihilation since I was going out for dinner a few hours later landing. The snack option was smaller than on the Westward Declension flights but I rarely want a 2d repast on the shorter Due east Coast routes so it was fine for me. Yous could just have the finger sandwiches or the cakes or both if you wished. There was also a burger.

The service was typical Virgin on this flight. Enthusiastic, friendly but not overly formal. I e'er appreciate that Virgin are pretty consequent for me with practiced service. My flying home they were not as good simply still did the service as expected for the most part and were friendly.

Entertainment

TV screen with USB port to left in the fiddling cubby pigsty at lesser of the screen

The Virgin in-flight amusement I usually notice pretty skilful in terms of selection. As usual, I establish quite a few films and TV programs I wanted to watch but only managed half a comedy film as I was working or trying to sleep for much of the flight. The screens have a reasonable definition but I observe them a little modest, although they are quite close to you lot which helps. Racket cancelling headphones are supplied which are OK simply not great so I usually use my own on Virgin.

There is a multi-country socket and a USB just I practice find the USB exceptionally fiddly to apply as it is at a strange bending underneath the TV and not easy to see from in a higher place.

I needed to finish an article so I bought the entire flight Wi-Fi package for £xiv.99, which I didn't recall was as well bad price wise. The speed was nowhere near streaming just it was fast plenty for working and uploading photos and social media. The only real complaint is that you tin only use it on one device which is irritating if you lot are trying to do things that require a mobile application such every bit instagram whilst using a laptop. Y'all tin switch pretty easily merely it was a lot of hassle as it meant I had to keep stopping what I was going to switch back and forth.

Determination

The motel was a big improvement on the sometime A330 one and the simply real deviation from the B787 was the layout of the bar. The food wasn't every bit proficient as some of my previous flights with the somewhat disastrous starter, merely the crew were as charming as e'er. I know a lot of people aren't a fan of the seats but I really quite like them for sleeping once y'all take got them in bed mode. I likewise like that I can put my feet up on the ottoman from boarding and that the seats are reasonably private and have alley access.

Overall it was an enjoyable flight and I would definitely fly Virgin again in the future. You can find more information on Upper Class here.
